DIY Wardrobe Planning Guide
How should you go about planning your ideal wardrobe?
1 The first step in planning your ideal wardrobe is to work out the dimensions of your wardrobe opening. It is very helpful to draw a plan view of your wardrobe opening (to scale).
It is also important to consider what type of doors you want on your wardrobe, and if they are/will be hinged or sliding. The type of doors will affect the design of your wardrobe. For example, two sliding doors will prevent a wardrobe design with a central drawer box. Hinged doors, on the other hand, would enable you to choose a drawer box in the centre of the opening.
2 The second step is to decide on how many people are going to be using the wardrobe (for example, do you need ‘His’ and ‘Hers’ sections?).
3 The third step is to work out what wardrobe components you need to best store your clothes. To do this, divide your clothes into items that require the following:

• Full Hanging – Ideal for dresses and coats (up to 1700mm long)
• ¾ Hanging – Ideal for shorter dresses (up to 1500mm long)
• Pants Hanging – Ideal for pants (Up to 1300mm long)
• ½ Hanging – Ideal for shirts and skirts (up to 1000mm long)
• Shelving – Ideal for items such as t shirts and shorts.
• Drawers – Ideal for storing socks and underwear.
There are also specialty components available, such as shoe racks, baskets, belt and tie racks, and more.
4 The fourth step is to start working on the wardrobe layout and design that is perfect for you. Please view the range of designs and examples available in our wardrobe design section, showing wardrobe layouts that make best use of the available space. These designs can be modified to suit your wardrobe opening.
